Summary
BookHoot is a reading app for children and their parents or guardians. The current iOS app stores reading activity locally on the device. We do not use third-party advertising, third-party analytics, tracking SDKs, public child profiles, chat, public leaderboards, or social sharing in the current app.
If a future version adds cloud sync, accounts, analytics, or other data collection, we will update this policy and the App Store privacy details before that release.
Information Stored Locally
The app may store the following information on the device so the family can use BookHoot:
- Parent display name.
- Parent PIN and recovery answer.
- Child nickname and age.
- Book ratings, short reviews, moods, tags, wishes, and suggestions.
- Reading minutes, streaks, gems, points, levels, rewards, stickers, and avatar selections.
- Parent settings, content filters, weekly reading cap, consent timestamp, and privacy notice version.
BookHoot does not ask the child for a real name, email address, phone number, school, home address, photo, voice recording, precise location, or public username.
How Information Is Used
Local information is used to show reading progress, recommend age-fit books from the app's catalog, let parents review or delete child reviews, let parents approve or decline book wishes, apply content filters and reading caps, and unlock private rewards.
Children's Privacy
BookHoot is built with child privacy in mind. Parent onboarding and a grown-up gate are used before controls and child-data actions. The current app is local-first and does not create child accounts or collect children's personal information online through BookHoot servers.
Parents and guardians should supervise app use and avoid entering a child's real name or direct contact information into free-text review fields.
Parent Rights and Controls
Parents can use Grown-Up Controls in the app to review child activity, approve, hide, or delete reviews, approve or decline book wishes, block books, change reading caps, export local data, reset child activity, delete local child data, and revoke local consent.
You can also contact us at privacy@bookhoot.app for privacy questions or help with data choices.
Retention
Local app data stays on the device until a parent resets or deletes it, the app is deleted, or the device operating system removes it. Email support records are kept only as long as reasonably needed to respond, operate support, protect the service, or meet legal obligations.
Security
The current app uses a parent PIN gate for grown-up controls. Because device security also matters, parents should keep their device passcode protected and avoid sharing the parent PIN with children.
No system can be guaranteed perfectly secure. If you believe there is a privacy or security issue, contact privacy@bookhoot.app.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as BookHoot changes. The latest version will be posted at this URL with a new effective date. Material privacy changes will be reflected in the app and App Store privacy information when required.
